Bespoke

Bespoke.
A decision.

It belongs to a man who makes important decisions every day. A man who has worked for what he has, and knows that real quality takes time and patience.

The word comes from the language of the London tailors. When a gentleman chose his cloth, it was set aside for him: it was spoken for, and no one else could have it. It still means that. From the first line to the last stitch, everything is about you.

A good suit is not what people notice.
They notice you, in it.

House style

Neapolitan hands.
A Budapest gentlemen’s tailor.

Our suits follow the classic Italian school of tailoring. A strong shoulder, a lapel rising straight from the button, a long, clean line. Strength that has no need to raise its voice.

The Italians call it sprezzatura: elegance that shows no effort. Behind it, all the same, lie decades of work.

Our tailoring house on Andrássy Avenue is led by Girolamo Dispoto, a master tailor from Naples. He brought generations of knowledge with him, and passes it on here in Budapest.

The process

The journey is
part of the pleasure.

We do not hurry. Through conversations and fittings, a piece takes shape that fits you and no one else.

  1. A tailor at the salon desk, a tape measure round his neck, on the telephone
    I

    Consultation

We begin with a conversation. Where, when and how will you wear the suit? What do you like, and what not? From that, we choose the cloth and the cut together.

  2. Measuring: the tailor measures the back of a jacket with a tape
    II

    Measuring

We take your measurements at fifty points, and we watch for what a tape measure cannot show: how you walk, how you sit, how you move. After all, you do not wear a suit only standing still.

  3. A tailor’s hand choosing check suit cloth swatches, black-and-white photograph
    III

    Cloth and details

You choose from the Holland & Sherry and Dormeuil books, with the cloth in your hands. We match the colour, texture and pattern to your skin, eyes and hair. Then the rest: lapels, buttons, lining, pockets, cuffs, monogram.

  4. Individual paper patterns on brass hooks, between a jacket and a shirt
    IV

    Pattern and handwork

An individual pattern is drafted from your measurements, for you alone. The cloth is cut by hand, and the suit is sewn by hand, stitch by stitch, in our gentlemen’s tailoring house on Andrássy Avenue.

  5. A basted jacket on a mannequin, white basting stitches on the shoulders and collar
    V

    Two fittings

At the first fitting the suit is only basted together: every line can still be changed. At the second, we check together that everything has found its place.

  6. A man in his finished dark suit in the salon
    VI

    Collection

Your finished suit is handed over in the salon. You put it on, and you feel the difference. We show you how to care for it, so it stays a faithful companion for many years.

Handwork

Every stitch
by hand.

A bespoke suit holds many thousands of hand stitches and hundreds of hours of quiet work. You do not see it at first, but you feel it the moment you put it on.

What lies beneath the cloth.

  1. IHorsehair canvas, never glued

The front of the jacket is held by a horsehair canvas. It is not glued but stitched in by hand, so the cloth moves freely with it and keeps its shape for years.

  2. IILapels shaped by hand

Shaped with dense hand stitches. That is why they roll softly and never lie flat.

  3. IIIHand-sewn buttonholes

A machine buttonhole takes a moment. A hand-sewn one takes hours, and you can see the difference.

  4. IVCollar and sleeves set by hand

So the collar lies softly at the neck, and the arm moves freely.

  5. VMade on Andrássy Avenue

Every bespoke suit is made here in Budapest, in our own tailoring house.

A hand feeling navy wool cloth

Cloth

Two houses,
nearly two centuries.

Cloth gives a suit its character. That is why we work with two houses whose names speak for themselves among tailors.

  • London · since 1836

    Holland & Sherry

One of the oldest cloth houses of British tailoring, today on Savile Row. Classic English worsteds, flannels, tweeds and light summer cloths.

  • Paris · since 1842

    Dormeuil

A French house with English roots: its founder brought the finest English cloth to France. Today it is known for rare, fine fibres and careful finishing.

The fineness of cloth

What does the Super number mean?

A Super 120s or Super 150s label tells you how fine the wool fibre is. The higher the number, the finer the fibre. Finer cloth is softer, lighter, and drapes more beautifully.

In return it is more delicate: it creases more easily and wears sooner. Fine fibre is rarer, so it usually costs more too. For everyday wear we recommend 110s to 130s, and the finer cloths for occasion pieces.

Bespoke or Made to Measure

Adjusted to your measure,
or born for you.

Made to Measure shapes an existing pattern to your measurements. Bespoke begins on a blank sheet of paper, and from the first line to the last stitch it is about you. We make both in the salon, and at the consultation we help you decide which suits you.

Questions

What people
often ask.

How much does a bespoke suit cost?

A bespoke suit starts from €5,000, a Made to Measure suit from €3,500. The final price depends on the cloth and the details you choose; we tell you exactly at the consultation, before you place an order.

How long does it take?

That depends on the cloth and on when the fittings take place. At the consultation we tell you what to expect. If you need the suit for a fixed date, such as a wedding, please mention it when you request your appointment.

How many fittings should I expect?

Usually two. If the cut calls for it, we hold one more.

Will you come to me?

Yes, anywhere in Hungary. Our master tailor brings the cloth to your home or office, takes your measurements there, and holds the fittings there too. There is a fixed fee of HUF 150,000, deducted in full from the price if you place an order.

Who makes the suit?

Our gentlemen’s tailoring house on Andrássy Avenue, led by Girolamo Dispoto, a master tailor from Naples. Every bespoke suit is made here in Budapest, by hand.

What does Super 120s or Super 150s mean?

The fineness of the wool fibre: the higher the number, the finer, softer and lighter the cloth, but also the more delicate. For everyday wear we recommend 110s to 130s, and the finer cloths for occasion pieces.

What should I bring to the measuring?

The shoes you would wear with the suit. And, if you have one, a jacket or shirt you love to wear: it tells us a great deal about what you like.

What is the difference between bespoke and Made to Measure?

Made to Measure adapts an existing base pattern to your measurements and is mostly machine-made. Bespoke is made from an individual pattern drawn for your figure, by hand, over several fittings. We make both, and at the consultation we help you choose.

I am getting married. When should I come?

The earlier, the calmer the process. We are happy to make the suits for the best men and the fathers as well, in harmony with yours.

Do you also tailor for women?

Yes. We also make women’s suits, trouser suits and dinner suits, with the same care.

Does the consultation commit me to anything?

No. The consultation carries no obligation to purchase. An order is placed only if you decide so.

Do you speak English?

Yes, the consultation can be held in English.
